Kids with autism tend to exhibit distinct signs of behavior; some of which are caused by vision problems. Vision Care Associates, a top eye doctor in the state, elaborates on common issues with their vision and their underlying causes below.
A Way to Cope
Kids on the autism spectrum tend to have hypersensitive vision. They can’t process visual input as efficiently as people not on the spectrum disorder can. And in order to cope with the visual overload, many are forced to adopt certain behavioral patterns.
Poor Synchronization Between the Central and Peripheral Visual Systems
The problem of inefficient visual processing is compounded by poor coordination between the central and peripheral vision. For one’s line of sight to be formed, one’s vision has to work in coordination with other senses. If there’s any dysfunction at all, vision problems start to form. In the case of kids with autism, poor synchronization between their central and peripheral vision systems forces them to focus on a particular point and ignore their peripheral vision.
Visual Processing Strategies
Even when focusing on a particular point, kids with autism can still be overwhelmed by the visual input. To process visual information properly, a child on the autism spectrum has to scan through images.
Other Vision Issues
Keep in mind that other vision problems, ones that aren’t directly related to autism, can make it even harder for a child with autism to process visual information. As such, we recommend that a child with autism undergo a comprehensive eye exam to diagnose other issues with their vision. For example, in addition to the aforementioned behavioral patterns, kids with autism tend to suffer from several eye movement disorders.
Additionally, vision problems may stunt a child’s early development. Kids aged 18 months to four years should get their eyes checked early on, as this period is crucial for the development of their language and socialization skills.
